I would rather drive the car with the ax rear end programming, I can't see a downside to doing it, it should make the car better and thus more fun to drive. It's too bad doing that and remaining in a street class isn't possible. However, going CAM also allows for 18" wheels of whatever width and offset works best, as well as camber plates, which also isn't too much added cost, plus it helps with fitting wheels with minimal strut interference.
I do get the slippery slope argument though, it's temping to do everything rules allow but I don't think a cam and heads are going to get you much for your ~$10k, so you just have to draw a line on that list and not go past it.
