Some gated community areas in Dublin think they are really fancy and I would expect some "Karen" activity if your car is obnoxiously loud and you decide to live there.

Other than that just leave everything Texas and you should be fine. When I moved here from Oregon I left my registration for 2 years and never had an issue. At the time I think I switched over my license and insurance, but if Oregon wasn't going to pro-rate my registration then I wasn't gonna let Oregon and California double dip on me.

I would recommend switching insurance location, in case something happens, but I'm sure Cali rates are higher than Texas so up to you. It may also be wise to run a front plate. I was never pulled over for out of state plates, but I have been pulled over for "no front plate" for what was clearly a DUI check but they needed an excuse to hassle me at midnight on Memorial day weekend.

You mentioned concern about being able to sell the car and that would be tricky since it will have to pass smog for sale in California, which includes a visual inspection for aftermarket emissions parts. There are enough cars out here clearly in violation of the laws so there are ways around it ($$), but the path of least resistance is going to be to return the car to an emission compliant state.
