It was probably overkill but I contacted 3M since they make so many different VHB tapes. They recommended the 5952 based on the application.

I purchase a small roll on amazon and used an exacto knife to trim to the recessed portion of the stanchions similar to firecaptain. Since then I haven't had any issued with it, solid at high speeds. FWIW I also have an early '17 build without the "reinforced" trunk lid.
