learned about them by breaking and rebuilding them. real life experience: you should try it.
the oil use is in reference to the first 10-15k miles, btw. i assumed that was understood, apparently not. and anyone who tells you a 0 mile engine is going to use less oil than a healthy 25k mile engine is pulling your chain.
