The center of the contact patch is moved out compared to the larger GM wheels. Those wheels are wider so the center of where force is acting stays about the same whereas just changing offset with a spacer will only move that centroid 20mm further away. A change like that can definitely be the difference between wrecking your wheel bearing or not when hitting potholes or track curbing or other high-impact stuff like that.
Doesn't sound worth it to me just to get a slightly different look. Would wider wheels be better instead of spacers? Of course that's the much more expensive option.
