The point of any of these systems is that with the cap off and the engine running the coolant will circulate and naturally, any air bubbles will try and take the path of least resistance, i.e. - 'up'.
With regards to positioning above the headers, that's a very valid point. Although my Headers are ceramic coated, I'll take some heat readings when finished (temp of coolant Vs. temp of the reservoir) and if an issue, coat the reservoir with heat shield.
