396 was 396 until 1970 when it was bored .060 and actually displaced 402 but still badged as a 396. This was the original mk 5 big block and my all-time favorite motor for purely sentimental reasons. My first car was a '66 L78 Chevelle, triple black, m21, 4.10 12 bolt. Got mine from the original owner in 1976.
