Based on my experiences, any repair work done at a dealer will be done using the parts that the computer says are correct for the VIN. If replacing parts on your own that come from the dealer, you will need a VIN for the vehicle that has the correct part or need to know the part number or option code for the part. This may sound stupid, but with some vehicles that is the only way to be sure you have the correct part. I am sure there is also a liability issue there.
