Either you’ve been very lucky with the quality of the leather, or you’ve not had enough cars with leather bolsters. The reason I do what I do to preserve mine, is because I have experienced damage like that in my otherwise pristine cars. It happens, some leather coatings are more durable than others.

A simple google search for bolster wear show pictures very much like his (and what I’ve experienced). There ya go, now you’ve seen 3 examples...
