Now, the Tremec 3160 in the turbo 4 and V6 does take ATF. But....

Did I miss something?
The only thing you missed (or didn't know) is that the "Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. 88861800)" is rebranded Dexron III.

The GM Fluid Specification and licensing for Dexron III expired in March, 2011. However, the Tremec 6060 requires Dexron III so GM rebranded it as "Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. 88861800)".

The Tremec spec sheet in an earlier post shows Dexron III as the fluid for the 6060. However, GM shows the "Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. 88861800)" because GM doesn't license, endorse or regulate Dexron III anymore (although AC Delco still makes it without the license number on it). I suspect the GM Manual Trans Fluid is made by AC Delco.

GM stopped licensing Dexron III because it was superseded by Dexron VI for automatic transmissions (primary use). However, the Dexron VI is not compatible with the Tremec 6060 so the "Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. 88861800)" was born (or reborn).

If GM still licensed Dexron III, the Camaro manual would probably say Dexron III (just like the Tremec spec sheet).

The Tremec 6060 used in the V8 Camaros use Dexron III (or the GM stuff) and the 3160 used in the V6 and Turbo 4 uses Dexron VI (or Dexron II).

BTW, I have no expertise in this area and could have just made this up.
