Something seems a little off, when you hit the gas you should feel an immediate response and have no issues passing someone. Have you checked to see if there is any issues with your throttle body? I know others have changed out to either ported throttle bodies and have heard that it helps a lot.

Is the car stock? What kind of gas is in it? Sounds like a timing issue. Maybe the fuel is bad and its pulling out timing for knock?
