You do need he 2 years of fire science which include ..believe it or not..building construction, math, architecture, chemistry, etc.. after that for the most part the academy is the one that teaches you the real world stuff. The degree is good to have, but honestly, with the FD, they are looking for a couple things, longevity for the department, and will you get hurt picking up a box or will you be a go getter we can count on for 20+ years. I know this may not sound right, but remember, on the oral boards, usually it is management doing the hiring and they are about the bottom line.. I miss it though!
