My seat time will probably be spent bouncing back and forth between downtown Detroit and Royal Oak (a near northern suburb). This weekend my most favoritist musician in the whole wide world, Stanley Clarke, is Artist in Residence / host of the 40th Annual Detroit Jazz Fest. That’s the downtown Detroit part. Also, a number of my friends have bands playing in the annual “Arts, Beats, and Eats” festival in Royal Oak. Unfortunately neither of my bands is playing that event.

So why is Stanley Clarke my favorite? Well, when I’m not driving fast or spilling my opinions all over the internet, I’m a bass player. And Stanley is by many, many accounts the best bass player of all time. Listen to “School Days” and then remember that it was recorded in 1974 when he was a teenager or maybe in his early 20s.
