My brother's 2014 1SS, we just changed it at 1500mi. Did a good break in over that period, followed the owner's manual. Never burned a drop, pull some great dyno numbers.

No they're not mandatory, merely recommended.
You will find that most engine builders, engine breaking docs, GM performance guides, and on and on do recommend several early oil changes for engines, and the same goes for rear ends.
