I have the same thing after it's been warmed up, NEVER when cold. Erratic ticking/knocking like you said like two wrenches hitting together. Mine happens every 5-7 seconds or so after driving hard. Maybe every 20 seconds after just cruising. If I let it idle for a while it gets less and less and then goes away. I have 1 year left on the bumper to bumper but haven't had a chance to get to the dealer yet.
I'm thinking it may be an AFM lifter that doesn't like when the oil thins out after it warms up.
From the direct injection noises I've heard when the car is cold, and on my previous WRX, the HPFP makes a constant ticking and that is NOT erratic, and the ticking is much quieter. So I don't think mine is the HPFP
