Yes, it all depends upon how stretchy the cap material is.
Silicone is typically excellent in that regard.
The ones I provided a link to will need to be compressed slightly to seal on the intake tube (hose clamps work perfectly).
Regardless of how you do it, as long as you stop airflow in or out of the intake tube without anything being sucked in, and stop the propagation of noise through the firewall, it's all good.
