very limited residual tread life is only thing that would push me away from repairing the tire.
You will probably get comments about only patching the tire in the "safe repair zone," but you don't sound like the type that would do otherwise.
Personally, I still plug tires with this type of damage (nail puncture), and I know that is viewed very unfavorably in some circles.
