From my understanding, wider is going to be better in respect to grip so long as you have a wide enough wheel to support the tire, and avoid pinch. 285's are definitely within the acceptable limits of a 10 in wheel. 295's might be pushing it slightly but all 295's i've looked at list a 10 in wheel as an acceptable wheel width.
305's seem to be the point where pinch becomes as issue with 10in wheels, but there are a few people on here who are running them. I had my first taste of running 305's on a front 10in wheel, and even with limited experience was able to feel the sidewall roll over. I felt like i had to be more predictive in my actions to allow the sidewall time to roll and set. I'm still new to the autox game, so bear in mind most of what I'm saying is a regurgitation of what i've been reading.
The only other thing to keep in mind would be when sticking with the same aspect ratio, and going wider the tire diameter will increase, which tends to be a negative, as it leads to a taller overall gear ratio.
Thanks,
