I looked into this a little. So far, the only thing I can confirm is additional clutches:
10L80 vs. 10L90
1-2-3-4-6-7-8-10-R Clutch: 5 vs. 6
2-3-4-5-7-9-10 Clutch: 4 vs. 5
Other than that, it's still unknown. Could be clutch material. Torque converters are likely different (stall, of course, but likely construction, too).
