Yes, the brass nipple is replaceable.

I would suggest just using a grinder to shorten the nipple versus trying to cut it. Make your 45 angle after you shorten it.

To make installing the diverter a little easier you could remove the brass nipple, install the diverter, and then reinstall the nipple after you have the diverter seated.
