If you want to protect your car from sand and salt, towing it on an open trailer will be worse than driving it.

There are open trailers with large shields, which will at least prevent stone strikes (but not salt). I don't know that anyone rents them.

You haven't mentioned how far you're going or whether you would consider a professional transport company with an enclosed trailer. For me, that's the only option.
