I think the other guy you quoted was referencing swapping out the white ball upper stick for the stock knob upper stick only - he already had the hurst shifter installed. The upper stick can be installed from above. However, the entire shifter requires the exhaust and driveshaft to be removed and the transmission lowered ~3" in order to remove the old shifter and install the new one.
