Think thats a Ford thing and its a joint effort development but end product has slight differences and names.

GM uses first for forward gears(10), mounting(L for Longitudinal), and the strength rating(90). Used to slap an E on the end for Electronically Controlled but think they dropped that since all are now.

8L90
10L90

The Transverse transmissions follow same naming, but I dont know any of the top of my head.
