To collect metal debris in the fluid to prevent any shavings from getting into critical parts and causing more damage.
Most of the trans wear items are bronze, obviously non-ferris but soft enough and should be small enough particles not to cause problems. But there are ferris wear items that if one grinds gears enough will leave shavings that are hard enough to screw up the bronze blocker rings and synchronizers causing a myriad of problems from bearing failure, shifting problems, and seals leaking, to unit failure.
