I would not go as far to say it was a "scam". GM does not want na in and out west Texas discount oil change place buying low cost bunker oil and putting it in the cars for their $39 oil change special.

I don't know enough about dexos to know if GM is charging a royalty. Maybe, is it a few cents a quart? maybe.

Alls I know is Joe Average pays $50,000 for an expensive XYZ and wants the cheapest longest drain interval oil (note I did not say lasting or working) possible that will pour into the motor.... that is what Dexos IMO is trying to stop.
