Obviously you’re going to get lots of opinions on the best sources of used-car value estimates, so I’d suggest you compare them all. For example, in dozens of transactions I’ve never found NADA to be as “generous” or as accurate in terms of including options as KBB or other sources. (Many dealers offer a KBB valuation tool on their websites, BTW.) However, the KBB Instant Cash Offer program that offers to buy your car is totally worthless, because participating dealers aren’t bound to pay you that amount and will come up with all kinds of reasons to reduce the value of your car.
It really doesn’t matter anyway, because most dealers (and loan officers) will tell you they don’t use whatever source you’re quoting. To protect yourself, you need to comparison shop. And if you don’t like the deal, walk away; the dealer will call you the next day with a better price anyway.
