For me, it’s more about keeping it looking nice while I own it. It means I can drive the piss out of it and not have to worry about it looking like crap in a year or two. Some people might not care about rock chips, but they bug the hell out of me.
The added bonus is that it’ll probably be easier to sell and/or be worth a few bucks more when the time comes. But that is not my reason for doing it.
