Insurance cost had nothing to do with the 4th gen ending. 4th gen ended because it couldn't meet the newest crash safety standard at the time, and it wasn't selling well. Lack of sales had little to do with insurance costs, as most V8 buyers are over 25yo giving them cheaper insurance anyway, and the 3.8 V6 was a slug that could hardly get out of it's own way which was cheap to insure. Lack of 4th gen sales were due to the 20+ year old chassis, awful materials used and atrocious build quality. I went from a 2000 Formula Firebird to a 2006 GTO and the difference in quality was HUGE. I didn't feel as badly ripped off spending $28k on a new GTO vs. spending $28k on my GF (at the time) new 2002 WS6 Trans Am.
