It is a 5.0L engine, it is pretty VE limited at this point when it comes to how much torque it is producing. After all it is making about 84ft-lbs/L which is more then what the 5.2L voodoo engine is producing, at this point they can increase horsepower and at higher rpms.
To compare this engine to the LT1 engine which is making 465ft-lbs (in the Corvette) which comes to 75ft-lbs/L so it has growth there. Now if you look at GMs DR525 LS 6.2L LS3 V-8 engine it is making 498ft-lbs of torque which came in at 80ft-lbs/L. you also have the LT376 which is a hot cam/head package for the LT1 engine which is making 535BHP but only 470ftlbs of torque.
Now you can trade displacement and rpms when it comes to horsepower, you just can't do that with torque. This reminds me of the coyote vs LS3 $10,000 shootout, when it came to torque both made roughly the same torque/L (LS3 made slightly more) however the coyote used more rpms and obviously made more horsepower/L then the LS3 engine. They did some follow up articles where they took both engines and changed the intake on them.
