Common misconception. Based on contracts that automakers enter into with government agencies for fleet vehicles. The government requires parts be available for the vehicles
they buy for 10 years. This does not apply to privately owned vehicles. Automakers are required to have parts available to execute warranty repairs. Beyond that it's a crapshoot, but most automakers continue for as long as they can do so in an economically viable manner.
Exception being components identified by CARB that have an impact on vehicle emissions. There are several different schedules for emissions impact parts availability. Typical is 8 years for those. Also, electric vehicle batteries have an 8 year warranty.
