The wife and I go on road trips all the time. The trunk area is actually very big, however the trunk lid opening is tiny. The design makes it tuff to fit bigger objects thru it. You could easily fit a full size suitcase thru the backseats and fold them up again.(I believe you are the one taking the kids.) With the back seats left down we get both sets of golf clubs and bags in the car with no issue.
