I've not had one issue with using the Manual gate then back to Drive, no matter what RPM I switch back to Drive at. Just to be clear what I am doing:
1) Put shifter into M
2) Drop down to desired gear and hold
3) After going WOT, put shifter back to D
What gear, RPMs are you trying at? I want to see if I can recreate your issue.
