Differential rebuild

2016 Camaro SS Auto.

My car started clunking on turning left a year ago. Been driving it since. Last week it got worse plus it started clunking turn right also. I noticed on passenger side the axle has at 8 mm of play which is more than the drivers side. Oil was really black and full of what looked like powder metal. So much that the hole was plugged up when i changed the oil.

Dealership told they dont sell parts for a differential. Only as a whole. Eaton told me dont make rebuild parts for it. Only 2015 and down.

So my question is this. Does anyone know where i can get rebuild parts or at least clutch packs for these differentials. Or spider gears? Cant find anything on these.

On a side note. I don't think i have a 2.77 ring gear. I think i have a 3.27. leading me to believe i have one out of a v6 manual. Tire: 275/40r20. Goes 2k roms at 80mph

If someone changed the diff to 3.27 from 2.77 then they had the car tuned as well. If you bought it used then send a picture of the rear diff from the driver side and I can probably identify which diff you have. Changing the rear diff isn’t an easy process and involves changing out the flanges/axles depending on install.

If you’re wanting upgrades for power needs you can try local performance shops otherwise I’d just bought another diff from a parts yard or eBay.

Edit: I didn’t read the auto SS. I’ve not seen anyone put a v6 diff in a SS for 6th gen. Highly doubt someone did on your car

Several people have done this swap. Here’s a “How To” thread.

They’ve gone from a v6 auto 2.77 to a v6 manual 3.27

OP has a 2016 SS with the 2.77 from factory supposedly. The manual diff for the SS is 3.73 which not many people swap from what I’ve seen

But going from an SS 2.77 to a v6 3.27 I’ve never seen

Here is a thread where Pray and others discuss it:

Very interesting, I wonder why aim for the 3.27

Guess it remains for OP to see which one they have then

If all your bolts are tight, there were no leaks before, and the issue remains after changing the diff oil then I’d wager you need a new diff especially with the metal in the oil you mentioned. I can offer part number for the diff if you change your mind to replacing the diff instead of rebuilding but someone else with the knowledge should chime in on rebuilding and brands

Well i changed the passenger side axle hoping thats what it was but no dice. Something is broken inside the differential. I would the turning play while the flange was inward was very little as opposed to pulling out the flange 8mms it had twice as much of play and i could feel like it would jump a tooth. Didn't get any pics. But still trying to decide whether to buy a new diff or used one
