May 2018 - Ask Al Poll #5

Here's the next set of questions for the team.

I know it's been a slow go but keep the questions coming so we have a good selection and we will keep plugging along.
I see some good info to gain out of a couple of these.

Place your votes....

1) Why did the 6th gen SS 1LE get wider tires at the rear only?
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=527909

Given that the 5th gen 1LE and Z/28 both ran same-size tires at all four corners, I'm wondering what changed the philosophy specifically for the 6th gen SS 1LE away from maintaining the same tire size all around and simply making the rear wheels a little wider than the fronts.

Was it a downstream consequence of the bump in power and torque? Understeer budget or breakaway characteristics reasons and the Alpha chassis? Appearance? Other?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Can you expand on the recommended engine oils for track use?
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=516314

In particular:
Mobil 1® 0W-40 (It's usually in stock locally and seems like a reasonable choice, but is not dexos2™ approved.)
Mobil 1® 5W-50 (It offers great protection and is possibly better for emission systems than Mobil 1® 15W-50.)

(Valvoline® SynPowerTM MST 5W-40 mentioned in the manuals is now dexos2™ approved.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Where is the 7 speed tranny on the ZL1/ZL1 1LE?

I voted for the oils and hope if asked, the question is expanded to include whether using 5W-30 will still be considered a "good" oil and they would still honor the warranty if the new Mobil1 0W-40 ESP truly does become the factory fill. As my Camaro is street driven and does not go on the track so no need for the dual use oil.

What about the GM suspension kit question? :) Not enough interest in that one?

I voted oil as well.

If I may; Only Mobil 1 ESP and Castrol Edge make Dexos2 0W-40.

With that said, do the new 0W- oils address/reduce the previously known 0W- oil volatility issues in forced induction GDI motors such as excessive varnishing and coking?

If so, I am assuming that is possibly the reason that Chevy engineers have approved its use in dry sump LT4/LT1 for both road and track use.

Will that approval be extended to the wet sump versions of LT4/LT1?
(Honestly, I don't feel confident running 0W-40 on track but am interested in road use).

Mobil 1 15W-50 is not Dexos2 approved and yet is the only oil recommended for track use in ZL1 1LE, It is also OK'd for track use in LS/LT 1LE, SS 1LE and ZL1.
If according to the High Performance Supplement the oil is changed out after track use, may other high quality, full synthetic lubricants that are refined by companies that produce Dexos2 oils (i.e. Amalie/Motul) be substituted under warranty?

My apologies for the dissertation. Oil volatility in 0W- oils is my biggest concern.

Thanks for consideration.

That was on the radar. Look for it on the next poll, probably!

Thank you!! I think GM would sell a ton of suspension kits if they offered the info I'm looking for so folks can use that data to make an informed decision on what best fits their needs.
