Is an oil leak a common problem?
 

I have a 2019 Camaro SS with just under 10,000 km on it. Very recently I've noticed a small puddle of what appears to be oil under the engine after the car sits for a few days. I'm not 100% sure it's oil, but it is dark in colour like oil, although it appears to be much thinner than I would expect oil to be. I had a look under the hood and didn't notice anything obvious and haven't had a chance to look underneath yet.


I'll probably have the dealership look into it since it's still under warranty, but are oil leaks a known or common problem with Camaros? Is there something else this might be (given how thin the fluid is that I think is oil)?

check your filter, I had one on my truck not tight and was leaking.

Loose oil pan bolts have been the source of oil leaks for more than a few forum members. I found my oil pan covered in oil too when I got under the car recently for an oil change. Not what I expected to see on a $40k+ car with 22.5k miles on it. I do not know where the oil is leaking from in my case, but I will take it to the dealer for warranty repair before the next oil change.

All joking aside, if it's oil, I would check the oil filter. Maybe it's not tight enough, maybe someone forgot to remove the old gasket that got stuck to the car and put the new filter on(assuming you had an oil change already), though usually that will cause more than just a minor leak from what I have heard.

I was gonna say that as well, could just be plain old water from the A/C, especially since OP said it's thin.

Maybe put a clean pan under your car and capture a sample of the suspect fluid . You will know for sure if it is oil , condensate or another type of fluid . You could also take the sample with you to the dealer to help them find the leak . Good luck .

Haha yeah man I used to work in a shop and one of my coworkers did that to a customer's car. They made it a few blocks and when it failed it spat out all the oil quite quickly!

I'm pretty sure it's not just water as it has a dark tint to it and feels slicker than just water, although I can't rule out it's not water from the condenser combined with oil. I assume that would not be the case if it's just water from the condenser. The other thing to consider is I almost never drive with the air conditioner on, so unless the condenser runs under scenarios besides using the AC, I don't think I'd even be producing any condensation. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. The last oil change was mid-July and I've only noticed the fluid on the garage floor in the last 2 weeks, so I'm inclined to think that its not related to the oil change (ie/ the filter), although I will have a look. The suggestion that it's AC condenser sounded plausible since the fluid does seem rather thin. I'm going to put a tray under the car tonight as suggested to collect the fluid to get a better sense of what it might be.

I drove the truck for 6 months before it turned out enough to start leaking. I really thought I had a rear main seal going out and was actually relieved when I crawled under and found it dripping down the oil filter. Having an aux oil cooler you could have a line leaking too. Trans line are notorious for leaking.

I had to have my 2017 Camaro's oil pan resealed under warranty. Was not loose bolts.

I get a few drops on the garage floor, 100% it's oil but it's so small and so sporadic that I really don't pay it much attention. Is usually after I've taken it out and ragged on it particularly hard on the back roads. Never seems to be day-in and day-out even though I can run it some what aggressively.

Where is the LEAK? under the engine, front rear, left right etc.....

I had a leak which turned out to be a pinhole in a WIX filter....it ran back on the engine and I thought it was a transmission cooler leak....
