it is official... I have had a collapse!!

it is official... I have had a collapse!! I've had a ticking sound and twice I have reset the DI pump (wishful thinking). I can now see that one LS7 lifter is dead. Pray stage 1 cam, TxSpeed valve springs and 6800 RPM over say 3500 miles and maybe 200 to 300 WOT runs and blah. So before King LT says he told me so, well yep the LS7 lifter is dead. Now do I go for a bigger cam???:paddle: Shoot me a good lifter recommendation.

KingLT1 07-14-2019 09:06 PM

No sir...wasn't going to go there. :)

I wouldn't expect anybody to believe my opinion over trusted builders. That being said I am not sure why LS7 are still being offered with Cam kits...it's not a lot of extra money to upgrade to a lifter that has reduced travel and better RPM stability.

Johnson 2110 gets my vote.

Dang oldman! It may have fallen, but you’ll get it straightened out.

$429 is the price, I put in the LS7 before you told me not to:mad2:, so deep down I'm still blaming you retroactively. In my defense I was going to put in a small AFM compatible cam and things went down hill or uphill from there. Depending on perspective. I think I paid $190 for the LS7s with trays. I'll know more when the head comes off (thank god for studs). Now it is clutch time??? see it is a slippery slope.:noidea:

As undate, the wheel completely blew up on one lifter. When the car was new, and cams were just coming out, I had a whole thread on the LS valve train wars. I said then and I say now, I don't like cams for street use 100,000+ miles that have over .600 lift.

Even the new lifters I ordered the vendor says:
The Johnson 2110 Slow Leak Down lifters have became one of the best aftermarket "drop-in" style lifter on the market. Used in the Copo Camaro, these lifters are race and street proven!

Not recommended for more than .630 lift:frusty: and 420# open spring pressure
Designed for engines not using DOD/AFM
Set of 16 hydraulic roller lifters

To be honest I don't remember the lift of my cam, it is close to .635 either way the LS7 lifter should never be run and the Johnson is iffy at or above .630. Smallest TxSpeed cam that I know of is .635 lift.

So for my next build I'm leaning toward cam motion:
Grind Number: XA222/345-XA238/340-16+4
Hydraulic Roller Camshaft
Street Performance
Duration at .050": 222/238
116 Lobe Center Angle with a 112 Intake Centerline
Lift with 1.8 Rocker Arm Ratio: .621"/.612"
Recommended Displacement: 6.2 Liter Engines
Cylinder Heads: Gen 5 LT

or custom spec my own from them with
.588 / .588 lift cause I think I'm done with above .600 lift cams. I may go down to a much softer spring, something with 360 lbs open. Maybe one with a NA LSA so I can get the lope, yes this is NOT a performance mod, so don't get going on Oldman runs a 112 LSA cam (almost Hot Cam spec) on his supercharger cause he is senile. I want a lope and I want 100,000 miles before I even think of working on the valvetrain again (probably will still change springs ever so often).

Thoughts? Maybe I'm just unlucky, but after the LS1 to LS2 valvetrain issues where I literally broke ever part of the valve train at one time or another. I should have errored on a conservative cam and yes a way better lifter. Funny part was I was going to put the forged short block in at the beginning of summer and would have probably never run into this. My cam change started with me wanting to install a VVT compatible cam on a whim and just for practice... but I stepped on the banana peal of well I have a new supercharger cam just sitting here, and the heads are off being ported so um why not??

If you go look up a lot of the newer redesigned LS hydraulic cams from companies like TSP you will see one thing in common. They are now .600 lift lobes instead of .620-.650. I have always been a firm believer in keeping the lift .600 or less with a stock style LS/LT valve train.

That being said the spring pressure/rpm is a bigger issue then the lift when it comes to lifter longevity. I think you will be fine with the Johnson 2110's and your current cam. The high lift becomes more of a issue with side loading the valve stem and scrubbing the guides with stock style rocker arms. Really need to consider a roller tip imo for high lift stuff.

oldman 07-21-2019 10:10 PM

with .588 lift I should be able to get by with conical or beehive single springs at 360 max pressure.

So yep as I thought, and now you have confirmed... this .620 up stuff iffy. Not saying they don't produce HP, which they do. Not saying others can't get long life, whatever that is. I'm just saying for me, it is the cam motion .621 / .612 or I special order it with .588 / .578. For sure single spring 360 open 6800 rpm cut. If I want more HP, I'll change the pulley.

The GM hot cam is .577/.577

oldman 07-23-2019 11:08 AM

Would do a hot cam for the idle, but the really tight LSA and there is no fuel lobe ( I need the 38%) as my new target is 880 WHP uncorrected, well it was my target but now, with a sub .600 cam I may need to say 800 WHP, dunno. Everything else can flow enough and supply enough fuel. I may have to go to some hefty duration and .610.... Or just say I'm unlucky and the new lifters will not fail (no confidence).

KingLT1 07-23-2019 11:50 AM

I don't think you will have a issue with only replacing the lifters.

I believe the 2110r is a little more money, but a nicer unit all around with axle oiling.

If you are adding a clutch, be sure to find something that drops a few pounds! Its basically free acceleration, the more you drop :D

put the oldlady on diet already....
