Modified 6th gen A10: Driveline Concerns regarding drag strip tires

Hello,

My 2020 2SS A10 is slightly modified and I heard from several members of the community that you shouldn't run sticky tires on the vehicle on the track because of driveline tolerances related to the automatic transmission.

Can someone elaborate on this please? I am considering a Cam Kit and 416 build for my car, with the consideration of supercharging later, but worry about the driveline.

My shop says they've built a 2021 Camaro with 900hp on the stock driveline but they did specify this was an M6 with an upgrade done to the clutch.

Thanks!

Your A10 is a whole easier on the drivetrain than a manual trans is. You normally dont have issues until you get into the 1.15 to 1.19 area on the 60 foot which very few get to anyway regardless of power level. I know for instance AMP purposely sets their car up to 60 foot in the 1.20's for this reason and that car is a stock blower ZL1 that makes around 1000 RWHP and goes 161 MPH in the quarter mile..

So I should be ok then if I decide to cam and 416 the engine.

I just didn't want to shred my diff, and rip my axle/drive shaft in 1/2 doing a launch on some stickies.

Appreciate it!

No way. SS driveshaft and axles are weaker than ZL1. You'll likely pop one of those, or both, on a built motor leaving on drag radials at the strip...especially boosted. I shredded my DS with "only" 650 WHP or so.

As I said above my shop says they built a 2021 Camaro with 900hp on stock driveline and all they did was a clutch upgrade.

So who is right? My Shop or what I've read on here from the community?

That is why I asked the question here hoping to get a more definitive answer or an explanation.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you are wrong, but I can't take your word as being correct unless my Mechanic tells me the same thing. Because that rear end upgrade is $5000+. I need a definitive answer and my shop claims its possible on a stock driveline.

Its not that I don't believe you its more that I don't believe my shop and they are trying to dip into an $9000 upgrade that my car may not be able to handle.

Both statements could be correct. If you never launch the car as hard as it happens when you quickly floor it with drag radials on a prepped strip, the stock driveshaft could be sufficient, given that roll races or street launches represent a much lower stress level. If, however, you want a drivetrain that will take and survive any load, Josh spoke wisdom (he also mentioned drag launches btw).

Believe what you want. There are others on this board who had the exact same experience as me. Not sure why you bothered asking if whatever we say has to jive with your shops opinion. Bottom line is SS driveshaft and half shafts are weaker than ZL1, and I’ve seen ZL1 half shafts die too (just not as frequently). The diff is pretty stout on both SS and ZL1 cars…those both seem to hold up well.

The “2021 Camaro 900 HP” build you referred to is a ZL1 or SS…?

DEFINITELY NOT TRUE for OP's car!

OP has an SS model, not a ZL1, and the driveshaft/axles are weaker on the SS than the ZL1. Plus, the race car ZL1 that you are talking about likely has a modded driveline, to be even stronger.

Like I said it is not that I dont' believe you or the community it is I have a problem with my Shop not answering my question and I suspect they are chasing a sale.

Here is what he said word for word:

We always do cams pre supercharger you need the bigger fuel lob on the camshaft. we would add a fuel system when we install the blower I also have a customer looking to sell a Magnuson blower kit for a good price if you'er interested in the spring. We just wrapped up a 2021 Camaro build on a stock driveline with just an upgraded clutch that makes 900hp. Give me a call with any questions. Thanks Austin

Yeah you should find out if that was a ZL1. That would explain their casual attitude towards the driveline if so.

Josh is right on the SS having a weaker driveline so If you plan on drag racing on slicks/radials I'd at least do the driveshaft and axles. If it's going to be a street toy then I wouldn't worry. In the end it's up to you what you want to do but when you start trying save money on some areas vs spending more in others it can come back to bite you. Also if going the blower route you're wasting your money doing a 416.
