GM DEF 24%

I have a 2016 2500HD. The DEF monitor is stuck at 24%. Dealership says it is a software reset and not covered by warranty.

Anybody else have this issue?

Something has to be causing it to happen. There are tons of related articles on the web going back several years and GM will not recognize it as a warranty, recall or TSB.

Dealerships charge $150 to diagnose, say there is no part failure and reset the percent monitor.

Disco the batteries for 15-20 mins, fill the tank. If it still reads 24% then there is an issue in the tank. There are policies for certain vehicles to be covered on the def heater for 120k miles.

Thanks, I was planning on disconnecting the batteries tomorrow morning.

I picked up BiScan. It's an addon for Torque. Works beautifully to force a regen or reset silly little parameters like this.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Well, disconnected both batteries for over 30 minutes. Still stuck at 24%.

I know this doesn't address your problem, but on my Colorado I got tired of DEF issues so I tuned it out.

I plan on doing DEF and EGR delete soon.

Side effect of disconnecting the batteries, now I have to take the truck in to a shop to relearn the TPMS system.

There’s no relearn procedure like on the 5th gen?

No, it requires the relearn tool like a J-46079.

While there, ask the service advisor for a VIS. Should have a special policy for the def heater/reduct. We replace these all the time on 12-17 duramaxs.

Every dealership within 100 miles has told me if I take it in to them, they diagnose the issue, find no parts are at fault, I have to pay $150 for the diagnosis and to reset the software. They said software is maintenance and not covered under any warrentee.

What is VIS?

Speeddmn 09-04-2020 09:52 AM

A vis is from gm global that has a list of all open and closed recalls, along with all applicable special policies, pm me your vin and email and i can send you one.
