Useless???

Does this thing do anything or is it just "dress up" under the hood?

Protects the hood from heat?

I don't think it serves much more of a purpose. I've read they can be designed to help delay an engine fire from getting out of control allowing you time to escape. I've also heard it helps with sound deadening.

Having said that, I removed mine. It's stained and disgusting from car soap coming through the heat extractors.

I know my ZL1 doesn’t have one but other Camaros I have had definitely had hood insulation.

It's a nice place to put these:

If it useless enough for the ZL1 to skip it I don't need it either. TY!

The hood on the ZL1 is different than the SS hood too!

If removed, the engine heat will eventually damage the paint on the hood.

LT4Greg 06-08-2019 03:10 PM

That is correct!

Any proof of this? Let's see some examples.

Just saying, I've seen it before. Not worth removing.

Are you certain the engine heat destroyed it or was it clear coat failure? Also what about aftermarket hoods that have no liners?

I have a hard time believing engine heat can destroy the paint. I did a bit of digging about this last year and I couldn't find any proof. At what temperature does it take to damage car paint? There's tons of plastic under the hood of our cars as well.

I've seen hoods in the past where the paint became dull due to lack of underhood insulation. I wouldn't call it clear coat failure, but long exposure to high heat will definitely dull paint. I'm not telling anyone here not to remove the insulation, but that removal may result in paint damage somewhere down the road. Better safe than sorry.

8minus4, don’t try to explain anymore! Let people believe what they want to no matter what is being said.
