Bad day for my 2018 ZL1 1LE

This happened at the end of October, but waited to post until everything was settled.

Swerved to miss a deer, went over a cattle guard, car got loose, and then I was just along for the ride. Took out about 50 yards of barbed wire fence.

There was damage on every body panel to include the hood, roof, and trunk. Luckily, the airbags didn't go off. Repair estimate was just shy of $36K so I was totaled and I received what I think was a fair settlement with my insurance company. I will still take quite a beating for depreciation and the dreaded sales tax on a new one.

Big shout out to JoeP@TeamBeckyD for helping out with my quest for a replacement! He was very responsive and provided a lot of good information. My local dealer really stood tall with a great deal so I ended up ordering one from them. Replacement will be Crush, but I probably won't see it until spring.

The salvage is at Copart in Tucson. More pictures and info here: https://www.copart.com/lot/55548170/...-zl1-az-tucson

They won't go off in an accident, but slide at an autocross or hit a turn hard during track day.......BAM. Chev is strange.

Such low mileage, someone is going to get a good deal at copart.

Looks like it is done.

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. There is so much good to living in rural areas but the unpredictability of wildlife sure is a down side. In my part of Florida, your just as likely to hit a black bear as you are a deer popping out of the woods. Glad to hear your getting back in the game though.

Wowsers!

Hope you were alright, I mean, we know you’re alive but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t have been seriously hurt.

jamala00 11-22-2020 11:31 AM

Dang, glad you are ok. Makes me wonder if you would of been better off just hitting the deer.

Altered Carbon 11-22-2020 11:36 AM

Glad you're ok. That sucks that it happened though.

Glad you’re alright at least you didn’t hit anything solid and get hurt. Cars are replaceable you’re not.

Glad to hear you are ok.
Were you out of control when you hit that cattleguard?
I must admit I have never seen a cattleguard before.

Brudda*Termite 11-22-2020 12:38 PM

Cattle guards are something else, I slid across one in Arkansas a long time ago and ended up doing a couple of 360s on the ice. Looks like one hell of a ride you took, good to see you got out in one piece!

Damn... hate to see this

Without question it is always safer to drive through an animal than swerve to avoid an animal.

arpad_m 11-22-2020 01:38 PM

This is a heart-wrenching sight, but I'm glad you walked away unscathed, at the end of the day it's just a car.

Deer have to be one of the biggest risk factors at this time of the year in my state, I've been fortunate so far, but many say there is no way to never encounter at least one or two in a lifetime, the only question is if you have enough time to swerve and dodge. Let's hope your "quota" is now "filled" and you won't see any in your would-be new crush ZLE
