Is 14 miles on a new ZL1 too many?
 

I'm looking at a 19 ZL1 at an out of town dealer. He says it has 14 miles on it, has been on the lot for a month or so, and has been driven by two of his customers. Obviously, I'd prefer one with no more than 3 or so miles, but would you feel comfortable buying the car?

Maybe I'm being a little picky, but I'd think whoever test drove the car probably took it over 4k rpm and drove it harder than I would until the break in was over.

Mine had roughly that when I bought it.

Even if you order your car, it will have 8-20 miles on it. If you're looking at one on the lot it can go up due to test drives, so you are good with 14 miles.

Why do you say that? Mine fresh off the carrier had 3 miles on it. No lot monkeys drove it.

A vast number of new cars have anywhere from 3-20 miles on them.
I understand your concern that someone (be it a customer or one of the techs) took your car for a 'test drive', and decided to see what the car do, but in reality, most dealers would not let a customer take the car out by themselves. The salesperson would most likely ride with them to keep an eye on everything.

Bottom line, to me, you're being far to picky. These cars are designed/built to take advantage of the power. They're not made of tissue paper.

Even if they took the car above 4,000rpm once or twice, that's not going to damage the car. Yes you're supposed to keep it under 4,000 for the duration of the break-in period, but that doesn't mean one or two rev's is going to ruin the car.

If you're that picky about a mere 14 miles, walk away. You'd be worrying about possible damage forever.

This is my point. He said a couple of his customers test drove it. I wouldn't want to buy a car without test driving it, but if I did it wouldn't be abused. i'm thinking the average miles on a car off the carrier is around 3 if it wasn't pulled for testing at the factory.

Thanks. I know other higher-end brands are driven around tracks. GM seems so adamant on the parameters of the break-in.

The car is priced better than any deal I could ever expect to get in my area.

If you order a car it is yours and no one should drive it.
I would be super pissed if a dealer gave test drives in MY new car.

But yes, cars on the lot will have miles on them from test drives, I tested a new mustang and it had 70 miles on it. No thanks.

I have ordered 3 Camaros, saw them come off the carrier, the miles varied 6-14 miles, members in my club have seen the same. They drive the cars at the factory lot, rail cars, car hauler lots, it's not unreasonable. my point is even if you take delivery of a car, it will have more than 3 miles most of the time. If you buy off the lot then you will have more from people test driving, your choice, order your car, take delivery, or buy off the lot. I really don't think that few of miles would even matter to 99% of people.

If it was an ordered car, mileage should be PDI only. 14 would be high, but sitting on the lot there is no need to stress it. There are reasons miles are on it... test drives, GM/Owner had it for the day, etc. All which may be disclosed to you honestly or inaccurately. The dealer should let you test drive it, where you can determine if all seems correct.

We have had customer cars and ours with greater mileage when "New", and all checked out great, even over time.

Mine had three miles and was dealer ordered. I got it while it was being delivered. 14 miles shouldn't bother you, like everyone else mentioned. If you have to have 3 miles on it, then you would have to order it or find one that is being delivered to the dealership and is not already purchased.

A car is supposed to get about 10miles put on it during the PDI process by the dealership so 14miles is totally normal

It's pretty common for cars to have more than that when they arrive at the dealership.

Actually, not any longer. GM doesn't even want the cars driven during the PDI now.
