Starter ground wire

I just finished my build and drove about 10 miles and the car died… found the starter ground wire was being cut into on the starter heat shield and it looked like it was trying to weld itself to the shield . I pulled the wire away from it checked all the fuses.. I can here the fuel pump kick on and the heater control light up but nothing else works and the gauges don’t come on either and doesn’t crank or anything.. any idea what it could be

I’d really appreciate it if you could post a picture of the starter ground wire. I’m looking into a similar issue which if it applies to you is pretty coincidental!

Check the positive of the battery in the trunk. There’s 2 wires going to the 200A and 350A. I’ve seen a few people have either of those fuses blow when the starter ground wire does that. If it is this, you’ll have to replace that fuse and it should crank right up.

Again I’d really appreciate the starter ground pic and if the fuse is blown please send a pic of that blown fuse as well. I’m attaching what I’m talking about and will include a part number for it below

No such thing as a starter ground wire, and if the wire shorted *to* ground, it's clearly not a ground wire.

I agree. There is a cable that bolts to the engine block near the starter on one end and the car body on the other end. This cable creates the grounding link between the engine (including the starter) and the body/chassis.

I (and many others) have found it to be inadequate and have added an additional ground cable. I've attached a link on my thread on that issue. I have no idea if any of that will help your situation but it certainly fixes for many of us any slow cranking starter issues on a warm engine.

I’m not sure the correct term for the wire but he’s right on a wire shorting against the starter shielding. I’ve read previous threads where this has happened. I’m hoping to get a better idea of what wire is causing the short. Whatever that is, it’s causing the rear 350Amp fuse on top of the positive of the battery to blow and incapacitate the car

Hey Bumble boy-

Did you figure this out yet? I am having the exact same issue as you. I replaced my 350 today and it popped again after trying to start the car. Has to be a short when trying to start. It started ran and tred it again and no luck. Has to be a short on something. I’m going to remove the heat shield off the starter and see what is up. But all the wires around the battery look good.

Here is the start wire that shorting against the starter heat shield

Should be just moving the wire away from the shielding. Everytime it hits the shielding and shorts then the 350A is blown I’d imagine

Yea I removed the shielding and will wrap the headers on that side location and get a starter blanket, should be problem solved. Gmpartsdirect has this fuse assembly for 67$
