The first oil change in my Camaro ,,

I bought a 2021 Camaro 1Lt ( V6, ten speed auto ) July 1st, 2021 ,, I don't have a lot of mileage on the car ( 3500 km. ).

I contacted the local GM dealership's service department enquiring as to when the first service should be and they told me to wait until I have at least 6000 km.

Does that seem right when 3000km. was recommended for the first service. Thanks.

It’s your car. Change the oil as soon as or whenever you want. I changed the oil in my SS 3 times in the first 3k miles.

I am aware of 2 schools of thought regarding oil changes and new engines.

1) Change oil before recommended interval(s), removing wear-related imperfections from oil supply;

2) Leave the factory-supplied oil in place until the recommended 1st-change interval, as it contains anti-wear additives that benefit/condition internal parts.

Both of these ideas assume "normal" street driving. "Severe" operating conditions always have shorter change intervals.

I believe the factory fill is standard Mobil1 0W-40 ESP Formula, nothing additional added...

I think the "additional anti-wear additives from the factory" was more when they were filling with dino oil vs. todays modern synthetics...

They also use assembly lube from the factory on the high-wear parts, which comes off during the break-in process.

plan on doing you first rear end change at 15,000 km.

probably more important to break it in correctly...

The most popular websites on the interwebz are pron followed closely by "oil change/what gas to use/performance air filter" threads...

You really don't need an oil change just now, but why not do it if it makes you feel better? BTW, what does you oil life indicator say?

I've had 79 vehicles and I think 90% have all be changed by 1000 miles. My new Camaro has 800 miles on it and changing it this week. I changed my 2021 6.2 Silverado at 800 miles also.

Change the oil when the manufacturer recommends to change it. They built it, they kind of know what they doing. And if you don't trust that, then you probably shouldn't even have bought something from that manufacturer in the first place. LOL.

They also have a vested interest in making "maintenance costs" look low for a vehicle... Remember, they only warranty the engine for 5 years/60,000 miles... You could probably do 2 oil changes in the entire period and the engine would still run, however the long term reliability of said engine would certainly suffer... But by then, GM won't care, not their problem...

Fluids are cheap, components are not...

There is no one-size-fits-all maintenance schedule, and even the manufacturers will have alternate recommendations for certain types of driving that require more frequent maintenance.

I'd like to put 300,000 miles on my Camaro. The manufacturer would probably prefer I come back sooner, and the typical buyer certainly does. Odds are the manufacturer recommendations are not for the "keep it forever" crowd. So to each his own - individual plans for a vehicle can call for reasonable adjustments to manufacturer recommendations...

One thing I will say, on my first oil change the....oil squirted out from the drain hole 2 feet. In all the years I have changed fluids this thing really let go! Perhaps it was because the 0-40 factory oil was so thin?
