Build i4 or v6?
I know theres a lot of v6 vs i4 debates on here, and most people say get the i4 if you're going to mod. But having already blown 1 piston while tuned on my i4, i'm not sure which way to go. Cause it seems to me that by the time you get cams, forged internals, and a bigger turbo, and then pay to have all that installed, youd be around the same price if not more than just slapping an overkill supercharger on a v6. I already have an intake, downpipe, and intercooler for my car, but it's just seeming like its almost not worth it to do the rest of the super expensive stuff over just supercharging a v6 and not worrying about another engine blowing. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong on anything, i still have a lot to learn on these cars

Did you blow the piston on this 17 camaro ltg? Who did the tuning?

Ive actually had 2 engines blow piston #1. Once when i was bone stock at 2500 miles, and the 2nd one at around 45k miles when tuned by danytech. I dont think his tune caused it though, cause no one else has had any issues with his tunes, im sure it's just the crappy GM pistons like the first time

if they just did a short block then - possible something carried over? some defect in the head or something. I'm just thinking out loud. But that would sux, if we starting getting this on the gen 6.

I don't really feel like a supercharged stock 3.6 would be more reliable than the ltg, if you took that @6K and did forged pistons and rods, you could easily have a reliable setup, even with something like a turbobay. You would still have money left over for some lightweight wheels..

My .02 Cents is if your spending the money and intend to the I4 is the better option for a few reasons.
1. Forged Pistons and Rods w/Upgraded Turbo your easily at your 400whp with decent tuning. Also lower cost then SC after install if you buy a bare block cheap then you have the spare engine should anything happen. 2. You have a few options for forged rods and pistons with the LTG. Also a few Turbo Options. The V6 has Overkill, Edelbrock and Procharger of the 3 only Overkill is really known and researched on the track. 3. Once you go SC with the V6 that's your cement ceiling your around 420 to 440whp getting any higher is expensive and will involve shit like Nitrous and Meth whereas the I4 you can go higher with Cams and Meth well over that number to about maybe 500+whp. 4. More support overall. The V6 got shafted on aftermarket support ever since they went to integrated manifolds in the 5th Gen LFX. The I4 you have a multitude of companies that have been around and will likely remain around for awhile whereas the V6 you may see companies or options disappear like the V6 did last generation. |
Do it right, get forged rods and pistons for the LTG and build it how you want. You'll be way lighter than a supercharged LGX, and more reliable.

What I know is the ltg can get to at least 96 percent volumetric efficiency since I measured mine at the peak around 5500. I plugged my log numbers into this website and confirmed my numbers for VE and flywheel HP. Then I did some backwards regressions by testing MAF airflow and MAP pressures to increase the VE to 100 percent. The turbo boost I derived was about 25 psi. So when I look at this problem as a whole - You need a turbo that has Both the airflow AND pressure, and be able to deliver that through the plumbing. You need to also make piston pressure, so having strong pistons is part of it, You will need to supply the fuel, enter new injectors/fuel delivery. I don't know enough about what can be done at 25 psi with the stock cams. But my guess is that this may possibly be obtained with higher rpms hence cams and springs. BUT - The old EVO stuff is still selling and a plug on claimed 500 HP bolt on turbo set up can be had for $2500. No kidding a youtube with an EVO doing 11s But there's NOTHING for a plug-able turbo upgrade out there for ecotec nor ecoboost (ford). Go figure. Want to see the vid its here. With Forged Internals and running something like the ZFR you can hit 400whp with and i stress this competent tuning. You may need to upgrade the low side fuel pump for easier more efficient fuel delivery.

the thing that I would be concerned about besides the stress increase is the drivability. I am all about the low end torque of the true twin scroll. I'm more of a cruiser guy in bike vernacular.

At what point do you have to begin worrying about the transmission and rear axle on these things?
