Investigating shift knob rattle

I've had my 2017 SS into the dealership twice for the shift knob rattle issue (primarily in 2nd gear). The first time they hit the Torx screw with locktite and tightened it to spec without fixing it, the second time they evidently replaced the shift knob and lever (?), but if anything it got worse.

I'm thinking the OEM shift knob is multiple pieces and the rattle is somewhere in there, and to diagnose it im thinking of buying a cheap-ish single piece knob and driving around to see if the rattle goes away with a less complicated knob on there, but I may need to remove the boot to do that.

Before I do this, is there any harm in driving around without the boot on there for a bit? Thanks in advance.

No, there is a weatherproof barrier under it.

Great, thank you!

I took mine in for the rattle noise (very annoying!). I gave them the tsb number. They drove it and confirmed the problem. They then replaced the entire shifter. Problem solved!

Mine rattles quite a bit under acceleration in 3rd and a bit less in 5th. Do you have the TSB number of reference so can take it with me? Many thanks.
