Auto Tranny Fluid Question
Cars at the shop. Me and mechanic working out on. Just got the cam in now pretty much putting the motor back together converting it to ls3.
Tranny fluid leaked out and I gotta replace some of it. What is the AUTO tranny fluid to use? I saw a thread saying Dexron. Not sure what's available here at the auto store though. Will any auto tranny fluid suffice? Or does it HAVE to be a specific one? I put 10w30 oil in it, for example, instead of 5w30 because of the climate/weather here. Just wondering if any differences in tranny fluids? |
I'm trying to follow what you are asking. Did you say you put motor oil in the transmission? 5w30 and 10w30 is engine oil and not transmission fluid.
|
I followed you just fine. I am not sure if it matters. I assume you already checked your manual.
|
Of course it matters......
Red Line or Amsoil will do you some good. |
Dexron is a transmission fluid spec. If you have the Auto use Dexron VI. Mobil one sells some good stuff.

What ever fluid you use make sure it is Dexron VI in a 6L80e. Manual tranny's do not use Dex6, they use the obsolete standard Dex3.
|
Are there any fluids that are compatible with dex6?
I can't find any in my country :/ All I find is dex3 and multi vehicle ATFs. |

Good luck. Bill |
I'm going to slide this one down to the Trans section... Probably get better answers there...

Better question.
On a ls3 conversion / cam upgrade, how much tranny fluid do you lose? Does it HAVE to be replaced? |
You must use Dexron VI. Yes it is recommended to fill the transmission if fluid is lost. There is a special filling and check procedure.
