Removing M6 trans
I have to pull my TR6060 next weekend to get it rebuilt after something came apart internally and will also be putting in a McLeod or RAM clutch. Does anyone have any tips they can share for pulling/installing this manual trans and clutch? It will be done on a lift and I should have all the needed tools. Any special care needed for the throw out bearing or slave? Haven't dealt with a hydraulic clutch in a while. I appreciate the info!

Make sure you lower the cradle, if not you’ll be fighting the trans against the firewall to come out.

Once the car was on the lift it took about 3 hours to get the trans out, there were 2 of us working on it. It wasnt too bad really. The Whipple i think got in the way of the engine tilting back to get the trans out. You could see the SC was against the firewall/cowl. So we ended up having to pull all 6 engine cradle bolts out and pitching the cradle around top get the trans out. We had to roll the trans in the tunnel some to get it to come out. The shifter assembly was a little tricky to get out before pulling the trans as well. The clutch and pressure plates looked in surprisingly good shape considering the abuse it has seen. Should have the rebuilt trans back in about 4-5 weeks and a Mcleod RXT clutch and Hurst short shifter to go with it.

Are you replacing cradle bolts? I’ve seen somewhere they are TTY.

Hey Jhunsberger, what are the details of your tranny rebuild? Seems to me that swapping in the gear sets from an LT4 would be a good upgrade. 500 to 650 torque rating increase combined with slightly better gear ratios.

I don't have all the specifics yet, waiting till they get it tore down and see what failed. But I will looking into the LT4 gear set suggestion, that might be a good move, Thanks!

How many ¼ mile passes do you reckon you have on your trans? If I recall, you’re not exactly a stranger to the strip. I’m sort of surprised your trans turned loose before your diff, or your clutch for that matter. My diff is on its last legs and I haven’t done much drag racing at all, just a bunch of sessions on various road courses. Several of the faster auto trans guys have had diff failures. I’m certainly not wishing you bad luck, but apparently you got a good differential. I’m going to perform an autopsy on mine after my last track day of the year at Road Atlanta on December 5. My diff is getting so sloppy, I’m a little nervous about it. One of my buddies trailers his 1LE, so as long as we don’t both break something, at least I won’t have to pay a big tow bill. |
