I guess it could trick your brain into thinking the car is peppier but in reality there is no actual performance gain.

Isn't this how all throttle controllers must work, though? Basic input curve to output curve mapping, similar to what gamma correction maps do on our monitors. As you say, there cannot be any peak performance gains from throttle position manipulation, although it can eliminate the initial "dead zone" (which, however, I'm not entirely disapproving of ever since I saw how an unexpected road bump and the ensuing accidental throttle blip can throw you sideways in some conditions).
