How to: 2.77 to 3.27 LSD diff Swap SS Axles and Flanges
Just figured I would share my Journey in Swapping my A8 2.77 Diff out to 3.27 LSD With SS Axle and Axle Flange swap as well.
Its pretty awesome that these Differentials are so interchangeable. I am still new to youtube videos but there is good information here for people interested. https://youtu.be/ayyfbz1QvLA I will share a another video later with my experience with it highway speed gas mileage track discussions etc.. |
Great video. I'm curious to know what the improvement will be and the affect it has on gas mileage.

Do you know if the SS auto rear swap is a drop in replacement? It has the same gear ratio and lsd and I think uses the same carrier, from what I remember people talking, it didn't sound like it would need more than the v8 axles and diff.

opps, I see a better place to ask my question..
How much should it cost for me to convert my stock 2LT V6 A8 to the 3.27 axle ratio if I just take it to a shop and have them get the parts and do all the work? How much of a performance difference does it make for a totally stock 2LT V6 ? Is it subtle or a noticeable amount of additional pull ? |
I did this is my RS. I got the diff and axles from a 2018 2.0T manual. It was a part out car u found on Craigslist, diff and axles cost me $700. My shop charged me $325 to put it in. I used a Trifecta tune to update the computer for the new gear ratio. I have a JMS Throttle Controller that I usually run around 50-60%. Once in I turned my controller down to 10-20%. The pull off the line is awesome and a huge improvement. With the A8 I didn't loose any top end, just gained a bunch of bottom end. I run in sport mode all the time and haul ass everywhere. So far I have dropped from 21mpg to 19/20mpg which surprised me, I figured it would be more. All in all I would say it is a must do mod for the V6 and wish these cars came with this gear from the factory.

Does GM feel the A8 is too weak of a transmission to handle it ? |

the 2.0T MT.. yes? Or are they the exact same part shared by 2.0T MT and the V6 MT ? |
The 2.0T one is a direct replacement but the axles are more than twice as thick.

What axels?
(Considering a swap)If the LSD I need for an A8 v6 can come from a manual i4 & v6 (right?) (is there a difference?) What axels do you need to complete the install? (what car can I pull them from?) Also... is there anyway the SS LSD (w/coolers) can be swapped into my A8 v6? Is it the same as the v6 1LE LSD? |

You can do a swap to the i4/v6 Manual 3.27 LSD Diff just get i4/v6 Manual axles or get V8 Axles with V8 Axle Flanges ( This is what I did ) You don't want to use the SS LSD I mean you could hypothetically But the gearing is diff unless you just go with the 2.77 LSD No reason you could buy the cooler lines and everything be alot of work but doable. The V8 Manual has a 3.72 final drive which would be very short gearing and is not ideal some v8 auto guys have tried it and they ultimately just went with the v6 3.27 LSD for the A8. |
Thank you sir 👍. I’ve been scratching my head about this upgrade/mod for too long. I’m glad I had the right place to ask.
