Z28 vs ZL1
 
I'm on the fence about which one would be the better choice. Currently I have a 2016 Challenger Scat Pack with the 6.4L Hemi. Looking to sell my car, or trade it on a Camaro.

I've spotted a 2015' ZL1 and a 2015' Z28 and a 2014' ZL1... links below

Now obviously the ZL1 has more power. But overall what is the better car? For me it will just be a toy and get around 1k miles per year. So want something that will hold some value with low miles.

I like the looks of the Z28 better, but I like the supercharger.
What are some of the better upgrades to do to each?

The Z28 is a great track car. Over the Z it is a rough ride, stripped interior, no ac, etc. If that's your cup of tea..go for it. The Z can cheaply handle another 100-200hp if you go that route.

Might depend on the use. If you plan on some track time, you might get more use out of what the Z/28 has to offer. On the other hand if you want to romp around town you might have more fun with the extra Zl1 power and comfort.

While I don't own either, the Z/28 would catch my attention over a ZL1 anyday.

What all is missing interior wise on a Z28? I've seen some have the A/C option, is this correct?

So the ZL1 rides better then the Z28? Is this just because the Z28 is meant to be a track car?

So for the ZL1, what are the easiest mods to get more power?

If you want a car to only drive every now and that will hold its value, it seems that your best choice is the Z28. The ZL1 is more of a daily driver car, but since you won't be doing that you don't have to worry about the rough ride nor the missing commodities a ZL1 has. Also they are a lot more rare than the ZL1 and thus hold their value much better, ZL1s are rare but the Z28s are unicorns.

I will drive it to work on occasion, which is like 6 blocks lol. I'll cruise it around most of the time.

Maybe race 3-4 times a year at local events. Not actual track, just airport runway for local car shows.

How much faster is the ZR1 say in 1/4 mile? Stock for stock.

Which is easier to modify? What upgrades can you do to the supercharger?

I'm assuming HP Tuners is the most popular tuner for these cars?

Lots of questions that can be resolved with a little research.

A ZR1 is a whole different animal. 2.8 0-60 and 10.4 1/4. And can handle tons of g's and still handle. Twice the price too. A DI, even a PI engine is expensive to mod vs. the LSA.

ZL1- 1.9L Eaton blower mounted on a 6.2L engine, making 580hp
-full of amenities

Z/28- 7.0L making 505hp

You will need to define what's better for you. In reality, both cars have similar qualities, albeit different retails. You will need to choose which one to buy according to your tastes.

The ZL1 is an excellent all around Camaro that will do most things well. It also happens to be an excellent handler.

The Z28 is an excellent track car that focuses on track performance. It will have exceptional handling (stock), but at the expense of everyday comfort features.

I called and priced insurance on both today.

Currently I pay $237.71 for the challenger
Z28 $306.23
ZL1 $277.25

Does this seem reasonable? I'm 32 years old. No accidents or tickets on my record.
Or should I be searching for a new insurance company?

Assuming that's a month? Thats over twice as much as much as a typical State Farm/ AAA/ Allstate rate, even on your Challenger. I would call into Grundy or Hagerty. My quotes were $1150. from Grundy and 1340 from Hagerty. No mileage limit on either and replacement value of 50K with and extra 10k on all my OEM parts which are stored.


Two different cars totally, the ZL1 is a quick blast seat in the pants because of the SC, the Z28 is a LS7 high reving motor suited for road courses, as many have mentioned it is a non adjustable strut so it is very hard on the street. I personally would take the Zl1 over the Z28 as you can change the rear knuckles and upgrade the front bushings with Billets and with the xtra HP I stay way in front of every 28 I have run across on the track and I ride home in comfort. Zl1Le that's a different story.. Good Luck with your decision..
